I am truly obsessed with these guys. Though I haven't heard their actual CD that was released in a very limited manner, every track I've heard off it is absolute gold. Backed by some of the catchiest choruses around today, The Wombats continue to kill with their satirical and relate-able lyrics: "Everything was going perfectly until it backfired at the Disco, she slapped me at the Disco. I did something I'll never forget...made a move but it was well out of context." Aww, that wonderful moment where you think you're such a stud, go for the move, and bam! get shot down, is captured perfectly by the aptly titled "Backfire @ the Disco."
More realistic lyrics stem from the next track, "My First Wedding." The song begins like this: "This is my first wedding and I hope it will be my last. Things would be fantastic if me and the bride didn't have a past." Just after these words are spoken, where this wedding is already doomed, the cutest instrumental segment which wordlessly echoes "do do do do" comes in brilliantly. Wait til you get to the chorus, with the harmonizing oo ahh ahh ooo ahhs make this catchy track a true gem.
I've recently noticed that there are a ton of songs about Sunday. I guess it's just that great of a day. Well how about one about Sunday TV? Only one. Like the other tracks, the fast paced repeating drum beat turns this indie pop rock into more of a dancy tune. And because this is a Wombat track, duh it has the ooh ooh oohs to bring it up a few notches on the cutsie pop scale.
Oh, and did I mention these guys aren't signed???? Hands down the best unsigned band out there, on both sides of the Atlantic.
